Simon Swan: Business Owner, Global New Mobility Director Overview Design Brief: Our innovation team was tasked with identifying new value propositions (products/services) for Arcadis in the rapidly evolving Advanced Urban Air Mobility (AAM) sector. With market growth and investments accelerating, we needed to narrow the opportunity space through a combination of market research, client insights, and feasibility assessments—ultimately defining and validating a desirable, viable, and feasible value proposition for Arcadis.Desired outcomes: ✅ Research Insights &amp; Opportunity Space – Mapping key challenges and identifying relevant customer needs✅ Validated or Invalidated Value Propositions – Focused on digital tool concepts to support key stakeholders in AAMOur innovation team was tasked to find an opportunity for Arcadis to play and offer value propositions (products or services) in the space of Advanced Urban Air Mobility (AAM). &nbsp;&nbsp; --------- The Challenge: AAM presents high market uncertainty, with a complex and evolving stakeholder landscape. Its multiple use cases—passenger transport, logistics, and emergency response—will grow at different rates, creating operational and strategic challenges. One of the most pressing challenges we identified was energy infrastructure. AAM’s reliance on electrification adds significant stress to already overloaded power grids, leading to: ⚡ Grid overload risks – As AAM scales over the next 5+ years, increasing energy demands could strain existing power infrastructure.⚡ Local energy insecurity &amp; public resistance – Risk of power disruptions for communities, leading to "Not In My Backyard" (NIMBY) opposition if AAM is seen as exclusive or unsustainable. Conceptual Solution: ‘Energiports’To address these concerns, we conceptualized Energiports—integrated vertiport and energy hubs that not only power AAM vehicles but also store and distribute renewable energy back into the grid. Within the challenge and keeping in mind realisation of Energiports, two primary customer segments emerged as having the most pressing needs:1️⃣ Cities &amp; Local Governments – Seeking to balance urban electrification with sustainability and public approval.2️⃣ Vertiport Developers – Navigating high-cost infrastructure investments while ensuring long-term viability. Involving them sooner could have accelerated internal buy-in and decision-making.🔨️ &nbsp;Multiple Questions/Tests for (more) Reliable Insights When testing the concepts, due to limited sample size, we had to be sure that the evidence from customer responses can is reliable. By rephrasing questions and using multiple ideas targeted at the same assumption, we were able to get multiple evidence points for the same question.🔨️ &nbsp;Using Archetypes Over Demographics for Realistic Empathy and User Journeys Traditional persona segmentation (e.g., role, company size, geography) didn’t reveal deep motivations. I coached Sukoon’s founder and the Student Consultants who supported her through the development of the venture from an early concept toward a validated and operational social enterprise. My contributionsSupported the founder with human-centred design, value proposition refinement, customer understanding, co-creative experiments, goal-setting and prioritisation. Helped translate broad ambitions into realistic plans and milestones, while navigating team dynamics, volunteer capacity and the practical constraints of building an early-stage venture.My coaching approach combined empathy and deep listening with structure and constructive challenge, helping move uncertainty into clearer decisions, actions and priorities OutcomesOver the course of the programme, Sukoon progressed toward launch with its first psychologists and clients onboarded, co-creation activities underway, and an Arabic/English landing page live. The work also resulted in a clearer value proposition, more focused priorities and an actionable plan for continuing beyond the incubator. Key Challenges&nbsp;1. Founder overwhelm and burnout riskSukoon’s founder was juggling incubator expectations, deadlines, validation work and comparison with other ventures, which was creating pressure and making it harder to prioritise.&nbsp; My approach:I helped reduce the work into a smaller set of meaningful priorities, starting from the venture’s purpose and defining the three most important outcomes to focus on. We reviewed progress already made, identified what actually needed attention now, and used prioritisation tools such as an Eisenhower matrix to separate urgent work from lower-value pressure. I also encouraged focusing on the highest-learning, lowest-effort experiments rather than trying to do everything at once. 2. Turning a meaningful idea into a testable ventureThe mission was emotionally compelling, but the founder needed to translate it into clearer assumptions, experiments and practical next steps.My approach:I supported her in refining the value proposition, identifying key assumptions around desirability for customers and therapists, feasibility and viability, and designing co-creative experiments to learn directly from potential users. We worked toward a clearer model of what needed validating before investing more time or resources. 3. Team dynamics and capacityAs the venture developed, questions emerged around collaboration, roles, capacity and the need for additional support or a potential co-founder.My approach:I helped make those issues explicit rather than treating them as secondary. We discussed communication and team dynamics and I facilitated a team retrsopective to encourage open communication/feedback. I adviced to add the need for a potential co-founder to the venture’s feasibility assumptions. 4. Preparing the venture story and pitchThe founder also needed to communicate Sukoon clearly to others without losing the emotional purpose behind it.My approach:I supported pitch preparation by helping structure the story around the problem, target community, value proposition, evidence gathered so far and realistic next steps. Ami Tsang Deep dive: Overview Design Brief:The Faculty of Digital Media and Creative Industries at Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) tasked us with uncovering and improving the transition experience of MBO students moving to HBO education, focusing on their collective challenges and well-being.The Challenge:In the Dutch education system, students are tracked into MBO (vocational), HBO (applied sciences), or WO (academic) pathways at age 12, impacting their long-term educational trajectory. 40% of MBO students drop out in their first year at HvA, often due to social, structural, and identity-based challenges. Our goal was to understand their lived experiences, identify key challenges, and co-design an intervention that helps students feel supported, engaged, and empowered - connecting to themselves and to those around them..Process &amp; My Contributions:As the lead UX researcher and service designer, I strategised and executed the research, synthesis, co-creation, and design strategy through a five-sprint agile process, delivering insights to the client at each stage. Additionally, I led and taught user research methodologies within the team, ensuring a structured and impactful research approach. Deep dive: Step by step We started our process with our first sprint in which we had the following goals: Get a better understanding of the Dutch educational system and the trajectory of the dutch / migrant students who come to the Netherlands (kindergarten =&gt; university)Understand existing explanations of challenges experienced by students during this transitionDefine stakeholdersCreate a strategy for interacting with stakeholders / studentsAs a team, we all did desk research on the system and spoke to Dutch students, then made a presentation that summed up our understanding of the same. We realised the rigid nature of the system and the fact that this transition is systemic and rooted in the CITO tests which defines students’ ease of access to higher education and perspection of transition, we studied the literature. I introduced the practice of affinity mapping to the team and facilitated the same, through which we gained actionable insights&nbsp;organized along the themes: &nbsp;Students feel less than and left out&nbsp; Meritocratic education system as a wholeStrong role of family Strong role of teachers HBO ways of working Customization of study paths from a young age (CITO test). We also made a video to creatively bring to life this intial understanding of MBO students: Next, I took the initiative to introduce design research methods to the team through the following interactive presentation. stakeholders. We interacted with 1 teacher, 1 student councillor, 2 MBO&gt;HBO research experts and 1 faculty Dean. I led the recruitment, interview guide creation and conducting of all the interviews.&nbsp; Through interactions with the stakeholders, we discovered the following key needs: HBO students with an MBO background need a safe and connected space at the university. MBO-graduates should be able to learn new soft and hard skills. MBO-graduates should be able to explore their existing talents and continue developing them in the future.Need Support for MBO-graduates in building better relationships with themselves, fellow students and teachers. MBO-graduates should know that there is no rush to do HBO. What are their long term goals? It can be different for everyone. HBO administration and teachers expect the students to be responsible and independent enough to identify their issues and reach out to solve them. MBO-graduate students, of course were an essential audience to reach out to. However, we found it extremely difficult to reach them through remote digital media (due to COVID-19, we didn’t have another choice) and the ones we did manage to reach out to remotely did not want to speak about this experience since it made them feel sensitive and vulnerable. Due to this, I had the idea to&nbsp;conduct analogous research at this stage. Our fellow trainees at Digital Society School were also going through a transition from their past background to DSS. In this way, we managed to collect analogous audio story insights.&nbsp; However, we had to be aware of the fact that these insights are merely analoguos and cannot be used by themselves. We learnt that developing a mainly digital concept for this project wouldn’t be ideal. Hence, going forward we focused on developing a majorly physical, tangible concept. While interacting with students through this booth, we realised that they need a space where they can exchange their stories and be heard in regards to their education experience. This validated our design brief as well as the insights gained previously from non-student stakeholder interactions, analogous research and the literature.We also learnt that the best way to engage students was through in-person social interaction in a playful and informal format in order to create a dialogue. This format seemed to be one that students missed and gravitated towards. Hence, we chose to move forward with this direction Final opportunity statement: How might we engage MBO&gt;HBO students at FDMCI, HvA to converse about their educational experiences in a safe space so that they can reflect on their current and long term goals, support themselves, the school and other students&nbsp; and feel a sense of belonging? We then ideated based on this statement. We thought of multiple different ideas : card game, physical games, digital community spaces etc. and finally made a preliminary selection based on dot voting, and final selection based on the Pugh’s matrix (after doing low fidelity testing with students). Parameters were decided based on the opportunity statement. The final concept:The final outcome was ‘Ask. Further, asking zoomed out questions enables us to touch on the systemic context and struggles related to this transition. The card set also contains some wildcards which include questions that students can draw or write their responses to. This serves as a creative ice breaker that makes students confront their biases, their education and their life in a creative way; thereby bringing their latent emotions, hopes and needs to the forefront. This card set can be used as an independent card deck and in the format of a booth. The independent deck can be placed in HvA locations and played amongst 2-5 students. To play, one can read out the questions on the cards from each timeframe and share responses with their peers. The booth containing the card game would be used at the beginning and end of the first 100 days of first year students. It can be facilitated by the introduction committee or the study association at FDMCI, HvA. Listen. was developed in an iterative fashion through 3 rounds of testing and co-creation with students.&nbsp; In every lo-fi testing around, we observed students play the game (both formats) and identified where they struggled/were confused and marked the pain points on the journey map. After every testing, we co-created with students. Together, we ideated towards better questions to ask, ways of implementing the game, ways of playing the game etc. We did prototyping testing of the booth and the card game through roleplay.KPI's for Ask. Listen.: How many students visit and complete the game at the booth? → is it attracting audience? = 100% Is there a higher rate of students getting involved in the faculty programmes that support MBO&gt;HBO transitions? → is it mobilising students to help each other? = calculate long term How many students follow the Instagram and like/comment on the posts? → is it creating a community? = 20%. Also calculate long term.&nbsp; What is the drop out rate over the years when Ask. Listen. gets implemented? → is it reducing the drop out rate? = measure long termNPS: Ask students if they would recommend this to their friend = 80% (20 students. 18 promoters. 2 detractors . 10% detractors. 90% promoters. = 80% NPS) Could have also calculated CSAT by asking students to enter a mood emoji before and after entering the booth. Group discussion of stories has the potential to be transformative - of the group's culture, the individual identities of participants within it and therefore, ultimately, of practices within the schools. When people start to narrate their own stories, new insights are publicized. The practice of open self-disclosure can give students agency over their personal narratives and create an open group culture, in which new possibilities and practices might be publicized, without fear of personal rejection. (Pauline James, 1996).Limitations and future roadmap:We kept the scope of the project mainly limited to creating interactions between students since this topic seemed to be a taboo between them and through testing and co-creation with students, we saw that this actually helped them. We realized that involving HvA staff into the scope at this phase of the project would have limited the openness with which students converse about this topic. Involving them can be a potential next step so that they can know what the student perspective is and then help them but first students need to be open about this topic and tap into their own feelings about it: hence we went with the direction that we did with Ask. Listen.&nbsp; We also faced a limitation of time due to which it wasn’t possible to be in touch with all the desired HvA non-student stakeholders and involve them as much as we’d need to in the process. It was also quite difficult to get in touch and establish close contact with these stakeholders and this seemed to be a problem in and of itself. It indicated that the HvA system is somewhat fragmented. This reconnects to our challenge of MBO students struggling in their transition to HBO because if they need to reach out for support, this fragmentation can be a big barrier. Future recommendation 1: Use the game in MBO schools Ask. Listen. can be extended for use in MBO schools (e.g. Mediacollege, Amsterdam) at the end of the year for students who are finishing up MBO and deciding what to do next. Right now, the concept only addresses the 'end' of the transition, but how students are being prepped for the transition to HBO while they are still in MBO is a huge blind spot for us - we have very little information about it. It would help students and staff to play the game / implement the booth already at MBOs, for that would give them, MBO students&nbsp; and us insight into possible obstacles during the transition. This idea was co-created with an MBO student who is going to make the transition to HBO. MBO students should be told about it beforehand by the MBO school administration. Students should be clearly told the advantage of participating in this activity - e.g. they will get extra info about HvA that they won't get anywhere else. It could be made mandatory as well, to make sure that MBO students will attend. &gt; Who could organise and facilitate this activity?2nd/3rd year students from the FDMCI at HvA who have done an MBO before. They could be from student associations like Mimagine.Administration from the FDMCI at HvA who have been involved with the MBO&gt;HBO transition can oversee this if needed.&gt; What would the activity be?This activity would use another version of the Past-Present-Future card set. Questions for this second card set have already been made and translated to Dutch. 5 tables are placed around a hall in the MBO school.Each table has the deck with Past-Present-Future cards and Wildcards mixed into each of these. Each table has an HBO student and an MBO student.They pick one card up from each deck and share their response to it with each other.Then each MBO student moves to a new table (with a new HBO student) and repeats.This goes on till every MBO student has been to all tables. Future recommendation 2: Play the game between HvA students and administration It can be extended to be played between students and administration from HvA, e.g.: the study councillors, teachers, mentors and Deans. This can help the administration understand what students need and create an urgency around the transition - something that’s missing now. Further, it will enable the administration to take steps that will actually help transitioning students. Future recommendation 3: Implement Ask. Listen. through other parts of HvA, like the Diversity Hub When we did our 4th round of testing the final iteration of Ask. Listen., the Diversity Hub from HvA showed interest in implementing the booth as a part of their events. They found it to be very impactful and useful. In the future, Ask. Listen. can be partnered up with such parts of the HvA like the Diversity Hub and implemented through them. It is very easily scalable and one just has to come up with new questions in Past, Present, Future format. E.g.: add questions about student experiences with diversity and inclusion in the HvA. In this manner, many versions of Ask. Listen. can be produced. Future recommendation 4: Explore the possibility of creating a digital version of the Ask. Listen cardgame During our final presentation at the showcase, one of the members in the audience suggested that it might be helpful to generate a digital version of the card game, besides a physical version. This would be an addition to, not a replacement of the physical prototype: our test phase indicated that face-to-face interaction is still most effective. However, having an additional digital version could keep the conversation among students more alive. Stakeholder reactions:Our client, HvA, was elated with the outcome and&nbsp; are now planning to scale it regionally and nationally. Care institutions showed a lot of interest about Hygienius as a whole and Poppa specifically. However, these insitutions were not actually implementing and using Hygienius. &nbsp;There was a latent fear around the use of Poppa. They were championing this very disruptive female urinal along with the rest of the Poppa products. The incremental products like bedpans were secondary. Care institutions showed a lot of interest about Hygienius as a whole and all the products had been co-created with nurses and patients. However, these insitutions were not actually implementing and using Hygienius. Hygienius then approached a market researcher who found that Poppa Male Urinal was the product with the highest change of implementation followed by Poppa Sick Bag and finally (least of all) Poppa Female Urinal. But this was still not giving them a solution. They wanted to have Hygienius and its products, especially Poppa Female Urinal, in as many care institutions as possible. What better way to do this than approach a design agency? Design research objectives:Primary: Identify the the needs, motivations and cultures of the possible Poppa users. Secondary: Discover the opportunities for succesful implementation and use of Hygienius as a whole and the single Poppa products. Process followed:This project was developed in a lean, agile manner. Hygienius launches with its full service offering including only the the incremental products. 2. Poppa technology products are put into a sub-brand under the Hygienius umbrella called Hygienius Labs. By onboarding the hospital staff as Poppartners and not as traditional customers whom something is being ‘sold’ to, Poppa and Hygienius Labs get projected as a more authentic service.6. In terms of the service design, the hospital staff interactions have now moved from the front end customer journey side towards the back end. Here, the hospital staff can be seen as a part of Hygienius. This design output saw positive feedback from the Hygienius team. Their efforts in developing the most innovative female urinal now see an appropriate pathway to massive success. Prototyping, website development and delivery:The above vision and design for the Hygienius service was accepted by the Hygienius team. INK was then given the chance to design a website to communicate this vision appropriately to potential Hygienius customers. I played a role in designing the ‘Lab’ page and created the animations of elements on the Landing page and the How it works page. A qualitative study of global design practices to build directions and opportunities for Indian social design Author: Tanishqa Bobde Co-author: Dr. Raman Saxena Abstract: The design industry including design knowledge and practice is constantly evolving itself to fulfil the evolving needs of society in order to deliver a larger social impact. Social design is a field that stresses the positioning, responsibility and collective societal impact of designers and designed products. The underdeveloped and developing world can benefit largely from social design interventions. India is a developing country with social problems like poverty and poor healthcare - giving a large scope for social design work. However, major development of social design is limited to other countries. A qualitative study was conducted with 14 global design practitioners to understand the social design theory, knowledge and practice existing globally and identify directions and opportunities for the Indian context, by using a cultural lens. The study suggests creating open dialogue, simplifying vocabulary, bias-busting, fostering cross-cultural social design and encouraging mindfulness as the main opportunities. Octobud - A teaching aid for children with Down Syndrome Co-Authors: Tanishqa Bobde; Rishabh Bajpai; Revati Mahajan; Jagriti Agnihotri; Atul Kumar Abstract:&nbsp;Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused due to abnormal cell division. It can cause unique physical impairments like poor muscle tone, short neck, small stature, palmar crease, and flattened face. Early treatment programs by therapists can treat the specific disorder of the child. This study targets to identify the root problem faced by children suffering from Down syndrome. It is found that a major problem which hasn't had a lot of intervention done is that of cognitive &amp; language skills development. Thus this study tried to investigate the solution of improving cognitive skills in a child having Down syndrome and presented an inexpensive soft-toy cum teaching aid for them. This toy solves both problems: the inherent limitations of teachers/parents in teaching and the slow learning ability of children with Down syndrome. Delighted to announce that I have recently started a new job as Global Design Innovation Advisor at the Global Innovation Studio of Arcadis N.V. in Amsterdam.&nbsp;Arcadis has a new Global Innovation Studio team brought together to further define the company's innovation agenda, and drive implementation to proactively reinvent the business in the coming years. This multi-disciplinary team is responsible for creating innovative value propositions for Arcadis, focusing on sustainability and digital transformation.Our focus is to apply design methods and agile practices in order to create propositions that are viable, desirable, and feasible. The yellow loops on the home screen are metaphors for the design process. Complex, yet delightful. In September 2021, I started an Innovation Consulting internship with Impact Hub Amsterdam. Impact Hub Amsterdam is part of the global Impact Hub network of 17,000 entrepreneurs and innovators in 102+ locations worldwide in 50+ countries spanning five continents.My role involves:Driving a circular, regenerative economy by connecting entrepreneurial innovations with organisational opportunities within the impact space. Clients include IKEA, Renewi, Province of North Holland etc.Applying desk research, information analysis, CRM, service design processes and opportunity mapping to facilitate innovation and collaboration within the themes of circular economy, sustainable materials and business models for corporates, startups and SME's.
